Eight healthy lunch and dinner salads

The sad truth: once you reach your late 20’s early 30’s it gets easier to put on the pounds. And it is not so easy to then lose those some pounds. Basically, changing your eating habits and engaging in a healthier lifestyle is necessary to preserve you vitality. Try to eat a salad at least once a day instead of carbs packed food like bread, rice or pasta. And do not disdain this as a tasteless option: here are eight salads that are truly a finger-licking sensation: Fattouch, Tabouleh, Waldorf Salad, Greek Salad, Boiled Potato Salad, Ceasar Salad, Shrimps Quinoa Salad, and Niçoise Salad.
Fattouch
An easy number one is the Lebanese Fattouch. It is famous all over the world, and not without reason. It is a delicious salad to order when it is hot outside. Great for the UAE, and definitely worth ordering in a good Lebanese restaurant in Dubai. The Main ingredients are lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, radish, fresh mint leaves, sumac powder, and purslane. Fresh lemon and pomegranate juice mixed with olive oil is used as a dressing. The salad is finished off with toasted pieces of healthy pita bread. Very healthy and delicious.

Tabouleh
The Tabouleh is a good number two in the list. This fresh Lebanese creation can also be found in other Arabic countries. It is served on the side with most Lebanese meals. It is made of parsley, with bulgur wheat, diced tomatoes, onions, and fresh mint leaves dressed with lemon, and olive oil vinaigrette. Large leaves of lettuce are traditionally used to eat the salad.

Waldorf Salad
As third healthy option the Waldorf Salad is definitely light and refreshing. The salad was first created at its namesake Waldorf Hotel – the current Waldorf Astoria – in New York City in the late nineteenth century. Apples, celery and walnuts are used as the main ingredients. Often served on a bed of lettuce and dressed in a light mayonnaise. This world famous salad is meant to be a starter, but when you add slices of grilled chicken or turkey breast and dried fruits like raisins it can serve as a pleasant lunch or dinner alternative.

Greek Salad
At number four is the traditional Greek Salad another famous classic. It comes in many variations, with many different ingredients. It contains tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, onion rings, olives and of course cubes of Greek feta cheese. It is often topped with a bit of sea salt, oregano in a dressing of olive oil and vinegar. The taste of the salad is dependent on the area or island of Greece. Paprika, lettuce, and even pine nuts can be a creative addition. A Greek salad is also delicious next to grilled meats.

Potato Salad
The Lebanese Boiled Potato Salad is number five. It is easy to make, tasty and very nutritious. After the potatoes are boiled – with or without skin – let them cool off and dress them with a tasty lemon vinaigrette and some fresh mint. A truly healthy and delicious addition to your menu.

Caesar Salad
At number six the world famous Caesar Salad named after Italian-American chef Caesar Cardini.
This simple yet tasty salad is made of ‘romaine’ or ‘cos’ lettuce, crushed garlic, raw or coddled egg yolks, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, and of course finished with freshly prepared croutons.

Shrimps Quinoa Salad
The mouthwatering Lebanese style Shrimps Quinoa Salad is number seven. Shrimp Quinoa Salad is full of fresh vegetables and flavor. Quinoa is a nutritious pseudo-cereal that is packed with many vitamins and minerals. The salad can be made with peas, corn, cubed jalapenos, fresh cilantro, chopped, and of course tomatoes. The tastiest way is to top this salad with freshly grilled shrimps, or boiled shrimps as a healthier option.

Niçoise Salade
Concluding the health list at number eight is the Niçoise Salad. A slightly heavier option than the previous seven salads, but still a very healthy alternative. The main ingredients are tomatoes, tuna, hard-boiled eggs, Niçoise olives, and anchovies, dressed with a bit sour Dijon vinaigrette. The Niçoise olives are grown primarily in the Alpes-Maritimes region near Nice. To add substance it can also be served on a bed of lettuce, finished with some red peppers, and artichoke hearts. The ideal salad for when you are craving for something more substantial.
